Yellow-billed Loon on Mille Lacs

A fourth state record Yellow-billed Loon was discovered at St. Alban's Bay near the town of Garrison in Crow Wing County. The bird was found on November 11th and was seen by many people until early on the morning of the 13th. On that Monday, the loon made an attempt to depart but seemed unable to sustain its flight. It was seen to crash land on the ice, where, now vunerable and helpless, it was quickly attacked, killed and eaten by a nearby Bald Eagle. Photo by Dave Cahlander.
